At Florida Hospital DeLand, we understand how stressful a trip to the emergency room (ER) can be. That’s why we are continuously refining our services, policies and processes so you are in and out of the hospital as fast as possible.

As of February 1, 2009, we have reinvented, redefined and recommitted our process to a No-Wait ER.

Reinvented and Redefined.

The concept behind a No-Wait ER is to begin emergency care within five minutes of arrival. Physical and logistical changes have been made, from the first step you take through the front door till the minute you leave the department.

The obvious change is the reinvented triage process. Traditionally, you were met by a receptionist, who began the registration process; then you were moved to a triage nurse, who assessed your condition and prioritized your treatment and when finished, you were directed back to the waiting area to wait for a room assignment. With a No-Wait ER, the triage process begins at the door. You are automatically seen by an ER nurse, who is authorized to begin treatment, according to your needs, within the first five minutes. Immediately after, you will be escorted to the appropriate area – Fast Track or Acute Care.

This is only the first step. Throughout your stay, you will see quicker anymore efficient movement through the ER, from the doctors and staff and with the entire process.

“We’ve really concentrated on working out our patient flow to reduce wait times,” said Patricia Scott, Director of Emergency Services.

Recommitted.

Over the years, Florida Hospital Deland has continually grown and expanded to accommodate the explosive growth in Volusia County.

“Our volume had outgrown our process,” Scott said. “We’ve watched our numbers rise steadily over the last few years. We realized it was time to make changes across the board in order to find ways to move patients through the ER.”

Last year alone, the ER treated over 49,000 patients. In fact, the majority of the hospital’s 156 beds are filled by patients who have come in through the ER.

“We know how important the ER experience is to our patients,” said Daryl Tol, CEO. “The move to No-Wait is just another example of our commitment to our community we serve.”

The priority of the ER is that every patient receives the care they need as quickly as possible. Florida Hospital DeLand, as a whole, has pulled together to help eliminate long waits and to increase the speed of process.

“The move to No-Wait is more than just an ER initiative – it requires a commitment from every department and each staff member in the hospital,” Tol said. “We’re all pulling together and supporting our ER staff in their new effort.”

“We feel confident that the move to No-Wait ER is doable and necessary,” Tol continued. “Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our patients.”

If the No-Wait guarantee is not met, a gift certificate to one of DeLand’s downtown restaurants will be given out to show that a No-Wait ER is not an empty promise.

“When patients leave the ER, we want them to feel they were in and out quickly and their concerns were addressed,” Scott added. “We’re a community hospital – our patients are our friends and neighbors, and we are proud to be here to take care of whatever they need.”

Emergency care you can count on.

At Florida Hospital DeLand, we’re always looking for ways to improve your experience. Introducing the No-Wait ER is one more example our commitment to holistic care that treats the whole person – mind, body and spirit.
