Ann R. Morris
In February, 2008, when I was diagnosed with lymphedema, I realized that I had been suffering from this condition for a very long time.   Swollen ankles were the first symptom over twenty years ago.  Then fifteen years ago I was hospitalized for cellulitis.  The infection was cured yet even then, the word “lymphedema” was not mentioned and soon my ankles started swelling again.  I assumed this condition was inescapable because I had been confined to a wheelchair since I had polio fifty years before.

Finally in 2008, my doctor diagnosed the problem and prescribed treatment at Florida Hospital DeLand.  The treatment involved massaging and wrapping my legs for several months to get the swelling in the lower limbs under control.  I was also taught how to continue the treatment for the rest of my life.  When the therapist realized that I could not do the required massaging and compression for myself, she helped me get equipment that made maintenance possible.

In short, I enthusiastically recommend the Rehab Center at Florida Hospital DeLand to anyone who needs treatment for lymphedema.  Nicole Scheiman, the therapist who worked with me, was wonderful.  Her knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm made me look forward to going to treatments.  And now, many months after completing the treatment, I still have thin ankles and healthy legs!

At the age of 78, the word lymphedema was one that I have never heard of before.  Working with my occupational therapist at Florida Hospital DeLand, I am beginning and trying to absorb what this will mean for the rest of my life.  The occupational therapist has been a great teacher to help me understand what it is all about.  The results since starting the program have been tremendous.  Looking at the before pictures, I didn't realize how bad the situation was.  I am now able to see that I have two ankles and my legs are looking more normal.  All of this just doesn't happen,  I have to follow the program.  Because I have, I am now able to start doing the things I really enjoy doing, like walking and enjoying time with my friends.  Getting in and out of the car is easier too.  This wouldn't have happened without the treatment from my Florida Hospital DeLand occupational therapist.

The staff in the rehabilitation center has been one of the most professional, courteous, and well spirited people that I have had the pleasure of dealing with.  They go above and beyond their job description.  It is always a pleasure to see their smiling faces.  They help you reach goals that you could not even imagine.  They are a credit to their profession.

Lymphedema is an insidious and unforgiving problem for which must be fought constantly and thoughtfully.  It has engaged me for over twenty years, with a leg the battleground.  During that time, my weapons have included various pressure devices, massage therapy, and a fitness program.  Together, they have managed to keep the swelling within tolerable limits.

When recently circumstances required that I reevaluate my treatment program, I sought help at Florida Hospital DeLand, where I was referred to Nicole Scheiman, Occupational Therapist and Lymphedema Specialist in their Rehabilitative Services Department.  Her interest, enthusiasm and expertise were immediately apparent.  She evaluated my situation thoroughly, outlined her recommended approach to my problem, steered me through the process of obtaining Medicare and insurance support, and worked out a schedule of treatment most convenient to my needs.

The results of Nicole's treatments have been most gratifying in every way.  The lymphedema swelling has been reduced more than I would have believed possible, the mobility of my leg has clearly improved, and a feeling of general comfort is apparent.  Throughout the course of treatment, Nicole has encouraged my wife to observe and participate, so that we can continue on our own series of procedures that we have learned and measurements we can use to monitor my condition in the future.  In sum, the Florida Hospital DeLand's facility with Nicole Scheiman's extraordinary skill, lymphedema training and genuine concern for the patient's continuing progress have been more successful than I imagined when I began.  I would encourage anyone considering treatment to contact Nicole for open and honest discussion of the possibilities.

With unwaivering faith in God and his divine directions, I was blessed to be a patient of Nicole Scheiman's of Florida Hospital DeLand Lymphedema program.

It has been a rewarding program and experience.  We have accomplished great results in both the right and left leg.  Unbelievable changes in the legs.  Both legs now look like legs again.  With great care, concern and kindness, we have acheived wonderful results.

Nicole had a student Deanna during part of the time I was a patient, both were pleased and excited as progress appeared on both legs.  We had great success.  The program works.

Thanks,
Doris
