Florida Hospital DeLand Offers Health Screenings in Honor of Diabetes Awareness Month

DELAND, FLORIDA, November 6, 2007 - Florida Hospital DeLand will host a day of diabetes education and screenings in honor of American Diabetes Awareness month on Wednesday, November 14 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at 701 West Plymouth Avenue in DeLand. With seven percent of the American population suffering from diabetes and nearly one third unaware that they have it, Florida Hospital DeLand will offer screenings to aid in early detection and prevention.

Health screenings will be available from 8:00 a.m.-10:30a.m. in Classroom C and will include Hemoglobin A1C, cholesterol and glucose testing (blood sugar) for a minimal fee of $7.00 each. In addition, the hospital will offer free blood pressure and foot screenings. Those planning to have cholesterol testing are required to fast for 12 hours (water only) prior to the screening.

A diabetes friendly lunch will be offered in the Daily Bread Café along with nutritional information, and trivia stations will be located throughout the hospital. Trivia participants will be entered in a drawing to win gift certificates to area businesses.

“Our goal is to educate and inform the community about diabetes and how to lead a healthier life,” said Joyce Parrillo, RN, CDE.
