Stetson Student Gains Experience through Volunteering at Florida Hospital DeLand

DeLand, Florida, March 10, 2008 –Stetson student Joey Biondolillo has logged more than 160 hours volunteering in the Florida Hospital DeLand Emergency Department since October 2006. Joey is just one of many students who has taken advantage of the volunteer opportunities that Florida Hospital DeLand provides to local students. Volunteer opportunities are open to both high school and college-aged students.
“Most students take advantage of the program during our summer Teenage Volunteer Program,” said Volunteer Services Coordinator Marcia Smith. “We’ve had numerous students volunteer through our Teenage Volunteer program since its inception 46 years ago.”
The program affords students the opportunity to learn more about the medical field and help them with career selection. As a Stetson University pre-med student in his junior year, Joey has spent his volunteer time shadowing emergency physicians including Drs. Knight, Tucker, Gupta, and Frommann. The opportunity has allowed him to obtain first-hand experience in his medical field of interest.
Through his experiences, Joey is now confident that a career in the Emergency Department is right for him.
“I chose to volunteer in the Florida Hospital DeLand Emergency Department because it is a great opportunity for me to learn about medicine and how to interact with patients,” Joey said, “I would recommend the volunteer program at Florida Hospital DeLand to any student contemplating a career in medicine.”
