DELAND, FLORIDA, April 2 2008– Last week Florida Hospital DeLand was recognized as DeLand High School’s 2007 Business Partner of the Year.
“In the last few years Florida Hospital DeLand has been instrumental in helping DeLand High School students in various programs such as job shadowing through the Florida Hospital DeLand Education Department, the Teenage Volunteer Program during summer months and our very own “Bulldog 101” character education program. We couldn’t offer these opportunities without the hospital’s support,” said DeLand High School Career Connection Facilitator Marilyn Smith.
Annually, each Volusia County school nominates a local business that it feels is a top business partner. This year, Florida Hospital DeLand was nominated by DeLand High School.
“We are honored that Florida Hospital DeLand has been recognized for our contributions to DeLand High School,” said Florida Hospital DeLand Chief Operating Officer Steve Otto. “We continually strive to maintain a strong presence with the youth in our community and offer valuable job shadowing and volunteer opportunities to local students while participating in their education programs.”
Steve Otto is in charge of coordinating Florida Hospital DeLand’s efforts in the “Bulldog 101” program. One day a week for seven months of the school year, nine volunteers from the hospital spend one hour in a sophomore class homeroom discussing the book titled “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teams” by Sean Covey. This program is designed to aid in the character development of DeLand High School students.
The objective of the Volusia Partners Program is to encourage involvement of businesses and civic organizations in our schools; thereby enhancing student learning, enriching curriculum, and promoting school improvement.
